Books to Limpopo
Expanding minds and bring joy to reading
On the 26th of January 2018 Helmon Mkansi visited his old school, Xirhulurhulu Primary School, in Limpopo with books that had been donated to The Foundation by Oxford University Press South Africa. Waiting for him were excited grade 7 learners, unfortunately, there were some protests taking place and most learners and educators couldn't make it to school as the roads were closed.
However, those who did make it enjoyed reading and looking at the new books which will help engage and improve their literacy skills.
There are over 2.2 million illiterate people in South Africa with Limpopo having the highest number of girls not attending any form of formal education and males were more likely to obtain a degree while girls hardly finish secondary education.
Working with the school, as well as Ke Nako Youth Development Project, The Foundation hope to help encourage more girls to finish school.
